Dudh Kunda Trek
Also known as Solu Dudh Kunda Trek / Sacred Milk Lake Trek / Dudhkunda Cultural Trek.
Dudh Kunda Trek is a moderate 8-10-day teahouse/camping mix trek in the Everest (Khumbu) region of Nepal, reaching 4,560 m. It starts at Phaplu and ends at Phaplu.
Key facts
- Region
- Everest (Khumbu) (Solukhumbu)
- Duration
- 8-10 days, 4-7 hours walking per day
- Distance
- 60 km
- Maximum altitude
- 4,560 m
- Difficulty
- Moderate — Reaches 4,560 m at the sacred lake below Numbur with a fast altitude gain from Phaplu (2,470 m) in 3-4 days, on rougher, quieter trails than Khumbu. Days are short-to-moderate (4-7h) and the trek is brief, but thin infrastructure above Ringmo (seasonal kharka lodges/camping) adds a remoteness factor.
- Trek type
- Teahouse/Camping mix, loop route
- Best season
- Autumn (Oct-Nov) and Spring (Mar-May); the Dudh Kunda Mela pilgrimage falls on Janai Purnima (Aug full moon)
- Guide
- Not mandatory
- Restricted area
- No
- Budget cost
- NPR 45,000–70,000
- Comfortable cost
- NPR 70,000–110,000
- Guided cost
- NPR 98,000–140,000
- Getting there
- Kathmandu → BP Highway → Ghurmi → Okhaldhunga → Salleri/Phaplu (shared jeep 9-12h, ~265-275 km) → trailhead at Phaplu. Same road back. When operating, a 35-45 min Kathmandu-Phaplu flight replaces the drive.
- Altitude sickness
- Moderate — the itinerary climbs from 2,470 m to a 4,560 m day-visit within four days; sleeping altitude peaks around 4,030 m at Saharsa Beni, which limits but does not remove AMS risk.
Weather
Solu is lower and greener than Khumbu — mild in the villages, cold above 4,000 m. The lake basin holds snow from late November into March and the upper trail can be lost after snowfall. Monsoon is wet and leech-prone in the forests but is pilgrimage season (Janai Purnima full-moon mela at the lake in August).
