Jiri to Everest Base Camp Trek
Also known as Classic Everest Expedition Route / Shivalaya to EBC / 'Pioneers' Route'.
Jiri to Everest Base Camp Trek is a difficult 19-22-day teahouse trek in the Everest (Khumbu) region of Nepal, reaching 5,644 m. It starts at Shivalaya (via Jiri road head) and ends at Lukla (fly out).
Key facts
- Region
- Everest (Khumbu) (Dolakha, Ramechhap, Solukhumbu)
- Duration
- 19-22 days, 5-7 hours walking per day
- Distance
- 185 km
- Maximum altitude
- 5,644 m
- Difficulty
- Difficult — 20+ days with relentless up-and-down across five ridges before even reaching the main EBC trail (cumulative gain far exceeds the standard EBC trek), then sustained altitude to 5,644 m at Kala Patthar. No technical terrain and teahouses throughout, but the combination of length, cumulative ascent and altitude puts it at the top of grade 4, bordering 5.

- Getting there
- Kathmandu → Dhulikhel → Khadichaur → Charikot → Jiri (local bus, 7-10h, ~188 km) → Shivalaya (jeep or 2-3h walk over the ridge; some buses/jeeps continue to Shivalaya/Bhandar when the road is open) → trail. Return: Lukla → Kathmandu flight (35 min) or Lukla → Manthali/Ramechhap (20 min) + 4-5h drive in peak season.
- Altitude sickness
- High above Namche — sleeping altitudes rise to 5,164 m (Gorak Shep) with day hikes to 5,644 m. The long walk-in from Shivalaya gives excellent gradual acclimatization below 3,500 m, which measurably lowers AMS incidence versus flying to Lukla, but the standard risk profile applies from Dingboche up.
Weather
The low Jiri-Lukla section (1,600-3,500 m) is warm and green; it is leech-ridden and muddy in monsoon and the Jiri road suffers landslides. Above Namche standard Khumbu conditions apply: stable and clear in Oct-Nov and Mar-May, very cold above Dingboche in winter (to -20°C), afternoon cloud build-up in all seasons.
