Ganja La Pass Trek

Also known as Langtang Ganja La Helambu Trek.

Ganja La Pass Trek is an advanced 10-12-day teahouse/camping mix trek in the Langtang region of Nepal, reaching 5,130 m. It starts at Syabrubesi and ends at Melamchi Pul Bazar (Helambu).

Key facts

Region
Langtang (Rasuwa, Sindhupalchok)
Duration
10-12 days, 5-7 hours walking per day
Distance
100 km
Maximum altitude
5,130 m
Difficulty
Advanced — Crosses the 5,130 m Ganja La, one of the harder trekking passes in Nepal: 3-4 days with no teahouses or settlements between Kyanjin Gompa and Tarke Ghyang, full camping self-sufficiency, unmarked trail, and steep snow/ice slopes near the pass that can need rope protection. Altitude, remoteness and navigation combine to demand real mountain experience.
Trek type
Teahouse/Camping mix, point-to-point route
Best season
Autumn (Oct-Nov) and late Spring (Apr-May) when the pass is most reliably open
Guide
Mandatory. Solo foreign trekking is banned in Langtang National Park (NTB/DNPWC rule, April 2023) and operators uniformly refuse Ganja La without a guide; beyond the rule, the pass section genuinely requires an experienced guide who knows the route and conditions.
Restricted area
No
Budget cost
NPR 90,000–140,000
Comfortable cost
NPR 140,000–200,000
Guided cost
NPR 200,000–300,000
Getting there
Kathmandu (Machhapokhari/Gongabu) -> Trishuli -> Dhunche -> Syabrubesi (122 km; local bus 8-10h NPR 1,000-1,500, shared jeep 5-6h ~NPR 1,800, private jeep 5-6h ~NPR 28,000). Exit: Melamchi Pul Bazar -> Kathmandu local bus 3-4h (~NPR 300-500).
Altitude sickness
High - the route sleeps at 4,000-4,300 m for two nights and crosses 5,130 m; the jump from Kyanjin (3,870 m) over the pass allows little margin once committed, and retreat from the south side is long.

Weather

The pass holds snow most of the year; after any fresh snowfall it can be impassable for days. Winter (Dec-Mar) it is normally closed; early spring often still snowbound. Monsoon brings landslides in the Bhote Koshi/Langtang gorge and treacherous wet moraine on the south side. Cold at the high camps (-10 to -15 C nights in season).
