Tinjure - Milke - Jaljale (TMJ) Rhododendron Trek
Also known as TMJ Trek / Milke Danda Trek / Rhododendron Capital Trek.
Tinjure - Milke - Jaljale (TMJ) Rhododendron Trek is a moderate 5-8-day teahouse/camping mix trek in the Kanchenjunga (foothills) — Eastern Nepal region of Nepal, reaching 4,200 m. It starts at Basantapur (Tehrathum) and ends at Khandbari/Tumlingtar road head (Sankhuwasabha) — or return to Basantapur on shorter variants.
Key facts
- Region
- Kanchenjunga (foothills) — Eastern Nepal (Tehrathum, Sankhuwasabha, Taplejung (tri-district ridge))
- Duration
- 5-8 days, 4-6 hours walking per day
- Distance
- 70 km
- Maximum altitude
- 4,200 m
- Difficulty
- Moderate — Modest daily hours (4-6) on a broad ridge trail, but the upper Milke-Jaljale section climbs above 4,000 m with no permanent settlements — community lodges thin out after Gupha Pokhari and camping self-sufficiency is required. Navigation in fog and lack of services, not terrain, set the grade.

- Getting there
- Option A: Kathmandu → Biratnagar (flight 40 min) → Dharan → Hile → Basantapur (private/local vehicle 4-5h). Option B: Kathmandu → Dharan (night bus 14-17h, ~400 km) → local bus/jeep Dharan → Hile → Basantapur (3-4h). Exit: descend to Nundhaki/Gufa or Khandbari side road heads, jeep to Tumlingtar (flight or long bus back to Kathmandu).
- Altitude sickness
- Low to moderate — sleeping altitudes rise gradually along the ridge to ~4,000 m+ only on the final Jaljale night; most of the trek stays between 2,700 and 3,500 m.
Weather
The TMJ ridge is one of the wettest, foggiest hill chains in Nepal — mornings are usually clear with Kanchenjunga, Makalu and even Everest on the horizon, but afternoon fog is near-daily year-round. Spring bloom (28-34 rhododendron species) is the trek's raison d'être. Monsoon means leeches and zero views; winter brings snow patches above 3,000 m and very cold camps on Jaljale.
Permits
